Your Best Investment This Year

Where You Can Start And Why The Time Is Now!

“Train people well enough so they can leave, treat them well enough so they don’t want to.”

Your Best Investment This Year

In 2015, I was managing a maintenance and facilities team at GE (in Virginia).

I then relocated to New York and two years later, the Virginia manufacturing plant closed its doors!

Shocking huh?

I remember getting a call from HR asking me to entertain a new role. I would be leading the brilliant factory initiative which included restructuring the maintenance organization.

This new opportunity sounded great but there was a catch!

My wife and I would have to move to New York.
All I could think of was…cold weather!!?

At this point, I was with the company five years. It was my first management role and I was all in.

I lead with vision, apathy and compassion. I knew that my success depended on my team’s performance.

Having worked at other manufacturing plants, I saw the best practices and now I was running my own show (catch my drift?).

Anyway — I had seen how training and apprenticeship programs benefited the workforce. So, I would leverage vendors to provide training to my team at every opportunity. We were even exploring apprenticeship programs with the union leadership.

I believed in this team.

When we dealt with major equipment downtime or lose of power, the team rallied to solve the problem. I appreciated them and only saw fit to find ways to invest back into them.

Richard Branson put it this way: " Train people well enough so they can leave, treat them well enough so they don’t want to."

I led through transparency and honesty (to a fault).

One time, I told the team "take advantage of our trainings because you can always take the knowledge/skills with you. You never know, this job may not always be here."

The sad truth? — I was right.

I left for New York and a few years later, the company decided to stop manufacturing operations in Virginia.

Here’s the thing…

You're reading this story some six years later and the premise remains true. Invest in Yourself and invest in Your people because the returns are infinite!
Tough times don’t last but tough people do!
