Passion vs Obsession: The Subtle Difference

When to be unbalanced

Passion vs Obsession: The Subtle Difference

I used to think I was passionate about the art of trading.

I study everyday and apply my learnings in order to improve my craft.

It wasn't until 2am Sunday morning that I realized that it's more than a passion.

Becoming a master trader is now an obsession.

Before I explain, let’s define the two.

Passion: an extreme interest in or wish for doing something

Obsession: something or someone that you think about all the time

Put it this way...we devote time to a passion. But an obsession?
You can't turn it off.

Like most people trying to figure out life — we're asked: "what are you passionate about"?

We then make a list of likes and dislikes and go from there.

People who know me can tell you that I have a passion for creativity, music and technology.

I used to play musical instruments all the time because I was passionate about music. Later in life, other priorities competed with the time I could devote to music.

Can you relate?

So Saturday (like most weekends) I worked on software and attended YouTube University. My goal was to create data analytics tools to help me better analyze the stock market. Every trader needs their "edge".

I spent four hours working out the Python scripts (assisted by ChatGPT). I took a break and watched a few college football games and before I knew it, it was bedtime.

Around 2am I woke up with software ideas that would automate my market analysis. I saved my notes and researched a few topics.

Wow! Two hours had passed.

I thought to myself — What are you doing? But I couldn't turn it off.

Then I realized — I was beyond passion and it had become an obsession with becoming a master trader.

And — the ability to write my own software tools definitely compounded the obsession. AI has helped me materialize most software ideas that I dream up.

Here’s the thing…

When I reflect on my significant growth phases in life, it was due to an unwavering obsession to be my best. Whether it was music, technology or business — I was all in!

My question for you: What passions do you have that need an “obsession” for you to reach the next level?
