Conversations with Dad

Sailing Through Life's Turbulence

“The same wind blows on us all; the winds of disaster, opportunity and change. Therefore, it is not the blowing of the wind, but the setting of the sails that will determine our direction in life.”

― Jim Rohn

"Conversations with Dad: Sailing Through Life's Turbulence"

I miss those thought-provoking conversations I often had with Dad.

He had a brilliant mind when it came to fixing things and problem solving.

Deep into our phone conversations, he would often pose a technical question and then our gears would start churning.

Keep in mind that Dad was always the boss. However, he respected my input after proving my self as an electrical engineer.

And luckily for me, I had Google as a lifeline.

Dad says, “isn't it amazing how a sailboat can go in both directions no matter how the wind blows?”

Of course I didn't have a different answer but I was curious too!

After some research, I bubbled over with excitement because I just learned something new and couldn’t wait to share my findings!

A sail works like an airplane wing. It makes the air go faster on one side than the other. This makes a pressure difference that lifts the wing or pushes the sail sideways.

The boat also has a long piece under it called the keel. It helps the boat go straight. By using the sail and the keel together, you can steer the boat in different directions.

You can go against the wind by zigzagging. This method is called "tacking".

I miss him dearly but I really enjoyed those little moments.

Here’s the thing…

I later learned a deeper meaning of how a sail works from Jim Rohn.

Jim states, "The same wind blows on us all; the winds of disaster, opportunity and change. Therefore, it is not the blowing of the wind, but the setting of the sails that will determine our direction in life."

I am often reminded of this quote when I am dealing with adversity.

Do I wallow in sorrow or figure out a way to thrive?

If you really think about it, most people are going through something.

People will lend an ear from time to time but they have problems too.

Les Brown said it best “80% of people don't care (about your situation) and 20% glad it's you instead of them.

Too harsh?

The next time you are facing adversity in life and business — just remember my conversation with Dad.

Cheers!
