Celebrating Thanksgiving with an Abundant Mindset: Turning the Table on Scarcity

I hope you had a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving? (I sure did)

This was our first time trying a destination Thanksgiving celebration.

Our family went to Myrtle Beach, SC to celebrate and we had a great time.

The air was filled with stories and laughter.

I couldn’t help but notice the increasing buzz about Black Friday shopping plans.

The night ended somewhat early because Friday was the big shopping day and everyone needed their rest.

But — I had different plans…

On Friday, while some were preparing to shop, I ventured out to reconnect with an old colleague who lived in the area.

On my way back from his home, I noticed pure chaos surrounding the major shopping outlets.

First of all — it was Myrtle Beach in the off-season. Where did all these people come from? ( I wondered)

There were people and cars everywhere. I saw cars parked on the grass, cars lined along roadways, backed up traffic and 20 minute lines — just to exit the parking lots.

I could only imagine what it was like inside the stores.

I knew one thing. I didn't want any part of it. (LOL)

Later, I reflected on the Black Friday Frenzy and here's what I learned:

Black Friday is an example of the scarcity principle in consumer psychology. Retailers use the fear of missing out (FOMO) by limiting the availability of their best deals. This creates a scarcity mindset.

Isn't it interesting that one day we are “giving thanks” but the next day “scarcity” is in full effect?

No, I'm not bashing Black Friday sales — After all, it's human nature to stretch a dollar.

But imagine if one would flip from scarcity to an abundance mindset?

Reading Stephen R. Covey's book, "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" helped me and it could help you too.

Developing these habits can empower individuals to manage their lives, align their actions with their values, boost productivity, enhance communication, and foster better relationships. Better yet, live in abundance vs. lack.

The seven habits of highly effective people are:

  1. Be proactive - Instead of reacting to circumstances, proactively make choices aligned with your values.

  2. Begin with the end in mind - Start every endeavor with a clear understanding of your ultimate objectives.

  3. Put first things first - Focus on high-priority activities to achieve long-term goals.

  4. Think win-win - Collaborate to create solutions that satisfy all parties involved.

  5. Seek first to understand, then to be understood - Improve communication by truly understanding others' perspectives.

  6. Synergize - Combine the strengths of individuals to achieve more collectively.

  7. Sharpen the saw - Renew your physical, mental, and emotional well-being regularly to sustain optimal effectiveness.

Challenge: Next Black Friday, how about offering your own product or service promotion?
